George Church makes Time's 'most influential' list — with a nod from Stephen Colbert

Famed Harvard geneticist and serial biotech entrepreneur George Church was named to Time magazine’s annual list of 100 “most influential” people in the world on Thursday, with a special shout-out from Stephen Colbert.

The comedian and host of CBS’s “Late Show” penned a flattering mini-profile on Church in the issue. Other prominent local figures who made the cut include Tom Brady, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and chef Barbara Lynch.

Church is considered one of the world's top experts in the field of synthetic biology. He has co-founded scores of local biotechs, including Cambridge gene editing firm Editas Medicine (Nasdaq: EDIT) and Danvers-based Veritas Genetics. He made an appearance on the "Late Show" in January 2016, bantering with Colbert about the CRISPR gene-editing tool and how to genetically recreate a woolly mammoth.
